Mountain Course
British Columbia Forest Service Approved Mountain Course
Each mountain training pilot receives a comprehensive mountain training manual which covers the following mountain theory ground study topics.
Mountain introduction and psychological factors.
· The history of glaciers and glaciations.
· Mountain ranges and topography.
· Mountain winds and weather.
· Mountain wind mechanics and turbulence.
· Mountain reconnaissance technique.
· Mountain approaches and departures.
· Working with mountain terrain features.
Mountain Flight Training Program (20 hours)
To begin the flight training portion of the Mountain Course the training pilot should be endorsed on the Bell JetRanger. If the student does not hold a JetRanger endorsement one can be included with an additional 5 hours of fight time. Flight training air lessons are in the following format.
Mountain Skills Evaluation
Terrain and contour reconnaissance.
· Approaches and overshoots.
· Advanced hovering.
· Mountain confined area landings.
Mountain Technique Training
Mountain reconnaissance types and procedures.
· Approach power check and performance overshoot procedures.
· Mountain approaches, landings and departures.
Mountain Skills Development
Pinnacles, ridges and ledges, saddles
· Side hills, mountain valleys, platforms
· Cirques, glaciers, canyons
· Logging road landings
· Mountain confined area work sites
· Mountain flight training course summary and debrief
